The sound of the Alesis HR-16
Released during the late 1980s, the Alesis HR-16 belongs to a generation of digital drum machines whose sound was defined as much by technological limitations as by their sample libraries.
Its collection of digital drum samples provided musicians with kicks, snares, toms, cymbals, percussion and other sounds in a compact and affordable hardware instrument.
Decades later, Alesis HR-16 samples remain interesting because they capture a recognizable period of drum-machine design: digital, immediate and unmistakably different from today's enormous high-resolution acoustic drum libraries.
What's in the HR-16 sample library?
The original HR-16 contains a compact collection of drum and percussion sounds stored in its internal ROM.
The library covers the core building blocks needed to create complete drum patterns: kicks, snares, toms, hi-hats, cymbals, percussion and additional drum sounds.
Compared with modern sample packs, the collection is small. That is also part of its appeal. The sounds form a defined palette rather than an endless browser of alternatives.
Working within that palette can make the HR-16 feel more like an instrument than a sample archive: choose a sound, tune it, adjust it and start building the pattern.
What about the HR-16B samples?
The Alesis HR-16B introduced a different sample collection while retaining the familiar HR-16 drum-machine concept.
This makes the HR-16B particularly interesting today because it is not simply another version of exactly the same sound library. Its ROM provides an additional palette of drum and percussion sounds that complements the original machine.
Taken together, the HR-16 and HR-16B libraries contain 96 individual samples. Combining both collections therefore provides a broader view of the sound of this Alesis drum-machine family.
96 sounds from two classic ROM libraries
The HR-16 and HR-16B provide two different sample collections with 96 drum and percussion sounds in total.
In the original hardware, those sounds live inside two separate drum machines.
In software, however, there is no technical reason why the two libraries need to remain separated. They can be organized into a single instrument where sounds from either ROM are available simultaneously.
That opens up an interesting workflow: rather than reproducing only a factory configuration from one machine, producers can build custom hybrid drumsets using HR-16 and HR-16B sounds together.
Using raw HR-16 samples in a DAW
One straightforward way to work with vintage drum-machine sounds is to use individual audio files inside a software sampler.
This approach offers maximum flexibility. Samples can be mapped to MIDI notes, layered with other drums, processed with effects and organized into custom kits using whatever sampler the producer already prefers.
The trade-off is that the samples themselves do not recreate the drum machine workflow. Mapping, tuning behavior, pad organization and kit management depend on the sampler being used.
For some producers that is exactly what they want. For others, a dedicated instrument provides a faster way to move from browsing vintage sounds to actually programming drums.
Why tuning matters with HR-16 sounds
An important part of the original HR-16 workflow is the ability to tune individual drum sounds.
The machine provides 32 discrete tuning positions, allowing a single sample to take on noticeably different roles depending on its tuning.
A tom can move through different pitches, a kick can become deeper or tighter, and more unusual sounds can change character considerably as they move away from their original pitch.
This is one reason why preserving only the raw audio files tells only part of the story. The way those samples were manipulated was also part of the musical identity of the machine.
